At Laser Cutting Shapes, we’re passionate about more than just cutting materials; we’re dedicated to helping ideas take shape, especially when they’re for a great cause. Earlier this year, we had the incredible opportunity to support a dedicated team of Ohio State University engineering students by donating our laser cutting services for a very special project—their race car.
The team came to us with a critical need for their car’s tube frame. They needed a precise jig, or “buck,” to ensure perfect alignment for every piece of their frame before welding. This is a common challenge in fabrication, where even a slight error can compromise the entire structure.
To solve this, we laser cut several panels from 0.5” thick MDF. These panels were meticulously designed to fit together, creating a robust, full-scale buck that would hold each metal tube in its exact position. Our laser cutting technology allowed us to produce these intricate parts with the high precision necessary for a project where fractions of an inch matter.
For the students, this buck is more than just a tool—it’s a foundation for their work. It helps them streamline the assembly process, save valuable time, and most importantly, guarantee the structural integrity of the race car’s frame. It’s a fantastic example of how laser cutting can provide a critical advantage in complex engineering and fabrication projects.
