At Laser Cutting Shapes, we are constantly pushing the boundaries of what specialized textiles can do. To showcase the sheer scale and intricate detail possible with our LaserFelt line, we recently completed a flagship project for our own front office: a massive, 50-inch wide heraldic crest.
This piece isn’t just a decoration; it’s a masterclass in the structural and aesthetic capabilities of polyester felt when paired with high-precision laser technology.
We wanted to create something that felt both ancient and modern. The design features a central griffin flanked by two ravens, set against an incredibly complex geometric lattice. At the base, a flowing banner bears the Latin motto “Omni Luci Est Umbra”—a nod to the interplay of light and shadow that makes laser cutting possible.
To achieve the necessary depth and stability for a 50-inch installation, we utilized a three-layer composition from our signature LaserFelt collection:
EcoRigid Foundation: The structural “bones” of the crest are made from EcoRigid. This high-density, recycled polyester felt provides the stiffness required for large-scale wall art without the weight or fragility of wood or metal.
EcoFelt Details: For the vibrant colors and tactile textures of the griffin, ravens, and banner, we used EcoFelt. Its soft finish contrasts beautifully with the sharp, clean lines of the laser cut.
Intricate Lattice-Work: The background showcases a repeating geometric pattern that would be nearly impossible to achieve by hand. Our lasers maintained perfect consistency across the entire 50-inch span, ensuring every hexagonal cutout was crisp and uniform.

Cuts with Sealed Edges: The laser slightly melts the edge of the polyester, preventing fraying and leaving a smooth, finished look.
